I have read quite a lot recently on the power that can be brought to organizations by using blogs. Most of the information was related to not profit organizations and since I am a student at John Molson School of Business and I plan to make profit, these articles have not really caught my eye.
There is one however that I have come to find very interesting: Blogs Will Change your Business initially published in 2005 in Business Week but updated in 2008.
While this article first starts by taking a stab at blogs ( blaming them to be about self-obsession, politics of hate and willingness to achieve fame), it then recognizes the Truth about blogs : "they're the most explosive outbreak in the information system since the Internet itself."
In 2005, only 27% of Americans did read blogs, and a great number of blogs out there are ridiculously tedious and useless. That however leaves a good number of them to be very useful for the world of business.
For my example I will let you know about the blogging activity of General Motors. The vice chairman of General Motors, Bob Lutz, launched a blog at GM 3 years ago. Almost instantly did buyers bombarded him with suggestions and complaints. Organizations generally have to pay lots of money and spend a great amount of time in order to get the public opinion or their product, while all GM did was start a blog. In fact, if blogs would have came out early, it could maybe have saved GM from their big crash....
All in all, it seems to me that a blog is a very powerful weapon, so you must be sure to use it wisely and securely. If you do so, blogging will really change your business !
